The Executive's Guide to Staying Healthy While Travelling

How to manage training, nutrition, sleep, and recovery when you are constantly moving. A practical framework built for the reality of executive travel.

Travel is exception

The plan that works perfectly at home collapses on the road.

Most high-performing men have experienced this enough times to have drawn the same conclusion.

Travel is the exception. The plan resumes when I get back.

That conclusion makes travel the permanent enemy of progress. And for the men whose professional life involves frequent travel which is most of the men we work with it makes sustainable results functionally impossible.

The fix is not more discipline on the road.

It is a plan that was built for the road in the first place.

training framework

The Training Framework

The training session that requires a specific gym, specific equipment, and a specific amount of time will not survive a travel week. Hotel gyms are inconsistent. Schedules are unpredictable. Jet lag affects both performance and recovery.

The framework that holds is the minimum viable session built to produce meaningful training stimulus in any environment in twenty-five minutes or less.

A protocol built around compound bodyweight movements: push variations, pull variations, lower body, and core, executed at appropriate intensity based on the morning's HRV reading. No equipment decisions required. No gym assessment needed. The same protocol regardless of what the hotel has available.

This is not the optimal training stimulus. It is the training stimulus that happens consistently when optimal is not available, and consistency beats optimal over any meaningful time period.

nutrition framework

The nutrition framework

Most executive travel involves at least some combination of business class meals, airport terminals, client dinners, and hotel restaurants.

The nutrition framework that survives this environment is not a meal plan. A meal plan requires a kitchen, consistency, and preparation time that travel does not provide.

It is a decision framework. Applied in any environment.

Protein first identify the highest protein option available before making any other decision. Order that. Build the meal around it. This holds in any airport, at any client dinner, on any business class menu.

The protein anchor is the non-negotiable. Everything else is flexible around it.

Hydration while traveling is dehydrating. Cabin pressure, air conditioning, and irregular intake all compound the dehydration that impairs cognitive performance, mood, and physical output. One litre of water before boarding. Consistent intake throughout. Not an afterthought.

sleep framework

The sleep framework for time zones

Jet lag is a circadian rhythm disruption in which the body's internal clock misaligned with the local time zone.

The fastest recovery involves anchoring to the new time zone as quickly as possible. Local meal times from arrival. Exposure to natural light in the morning at the destination. Avoiding napping beyond thirty minutes if the destination is significantly different from the origin time zone.

Melatonin at a low dose (0.5 to 1mg) at local bedtime for the first two to three nights in a new time zone. Not as a sleeping tablet, but as a circadian reset signal. This is one of the most evidence-supported travel recovery interventions available.

recovery framework

The recovery framework

Recovery on travel weeks is managed differently from recovery on home weeks.

The priority shifts from optimising training adaptation to managing the accumulated physiological cost of the travel itself: time zone disruption, dehydration, irregular meals, the cortisol load of sustained transit and schedule change.

HRV checked every morning. Training intensity decided by what the data shows rather than the programme that was planned at home. Some travel days warrant a full rest day regardless of how the week was planned.

The man who protects his recovery on travel weeks arrives home in a state that can build on the week's training. The man who pushes through regardless arrives home in a state that requires the first two or three days back to recover from the travel before any meaningful adaptation resumes.

mindset

The mindset shift

Travel weeks are not exceptions to the plan.

They are a context the plan was designed for.

The framework is different on the road.

The non-negotiables are the same.
